Staircase Terminology

A quick reference for the common parts and phrases used during stair planning.

Staircase Terminology

Design conversations go faster when everyone is using the same words. This page gives homeowners a practical glossary before estimates, revisions, and finish selections begin.

Use these terms during consultations to describe what you want changed, preserved, or upgraded on the stair.

If you're unsure what a part is called on site, photos and measurements are still the fastest way to move the conversation forward.

Faster estimates
Clear terminology removes guesswork during quoting and revisions.
Better coordination
Builders, homeowners, and installers can all reference the same components.
Smarter decisions
Understanding the parts of a stair helps with budget and finish tradeoffs.
